Amazon WorkSpaces Applications now supports host-to-client URL redirection

Amazon Web Services has launched host-to-client URL redirection for WorkSpaces Applications, a new feature that automatically opens URLs from streaming sessions in users' local browsers rather than within the virtual environment. The capability allows administrators to configure allow and deny URL patterns through the AWS Management Console, giving organizations granular control over which web content gets redirected while keeping sensitive applications securely contained within the streaming infrastructure. The feature addresses a common challenge in virtual desktop infrastructure by reducing bandwidth consumption and computational load on streaming servers. When users click URLs in applications like Microsoft Word or navigate through browsers within their WorkSpaces Applications session, approved URLs automatically launch in their local Chrome or Edge browser instead of consuming streaming resources. This approach is particularly beneficial for bandwidth-intensive content such as video streaming, which can significantly impact the performance and cost of virtual desktop deployments. The host-to-client URL redirection feature is now available across 19 AWS regions globally, including major markets in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and AWS GovCloud environments. The rollout represents AWS's continued effort to optimize virtual application streaming performance while maintaining security boundaries between local devices and cloud-hosted enterprise applications.
