Google has donated its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) to the FIDO Alliance, marking a significant step toward standardizing secure payment authentication for AI-driven commerce applications. The protocol is designed to enable autonomous AI agents to conduct financial transactions while maintaining robust security standards, addressing emerging challenges as artificial intelligence increasingly handles payment processes without direct human oversight. The donation represents Google's effort to establish industry-wide standards for what the company calls 'agentic payments' - transactions initiated and completed by AI systems on behalf of users. The FIDO Alliance, known for developing passwordless authentication standards like WebAuthn and FIDO2, will now oversee the development and standardization of AP2 as AI agents become more prevalent in e-commerce and financial services. The protocol aims to solve authentication challenges that arise when AI systems need to make purchases, process payments, or handle financial transactions autonomously while ensuring the same security levels expected in human-initiated transactions.
