Customs and Border Protection Email Circulating
The Internet Crime Complaint Center (iC3) today issued an alert
advising that a fraudulent email is currently being circulated
in an attempt to get users to release personally identifiable
information. The
email is forged to look official and claims to be from a former
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Assistant Commissioner, Thomas S. Winkowski.
The email contains a claim that that a diplomat has been
stopped en route to the email recipients residence with a
inheritance worth millions of dollars. In the email is a
request for personal information in order to release the
inheritance.
The Email is a Hoax and users are advised not to respond to this
email. Users are further advised that the CBP does not send out
unsolicited emails.
SecureResearch advises all users - never
respond to unsolicited emails with requests for personal
information and do not click on links in such emails as they
often
contain links to malicious sites and malware. The sites
and URL's contained in these emails are disguised to look
official (whether government, financial, or other sites),
however they are attempts to steal your personal information.
