Advisory 2 – Too much hype?
Yesterday we released an advisory on the Conficker virus based
on reports of widespread infection. There are many in the
technology world pondering whether or not the Conficker worm
will have any impact on the technology world, especially on
April 1, 2009. We tend to believe it is better to err on the
side of caution when it pertains to this worm.
First – We don’t know what we don’t know. April 1st has been
stated as the next time the worm takes an action, what is this
next step? We are unsure of at this time, most likely it will
update itself and wait for its' next set of instructions.
Second – Getting people to update their machines is not a bad
thing. Whether it is ensuring your antivirus signatures are
up-to-date, or applying a patch to your machine, spreading the
word that one should do this is not a bad thing. Using a
deadline for an impending event sometimes helps users take
actions they should have been taking all along.
It is highly probable at this point that nothing of significance
will happen tomorrow related to this worm. That should not mean
let down your guard. It is still very important to ensure your
machine is patched and your antivirus signatures are current. As
more is learned about this worm and what action it takes
tomorrow and beyond we will post an update.
Try running the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool by
clicking Start, Run, type MRT, and press enter. This
should start the tool. Otherwise download and run the tool
by going to Microsoft's web site at:
