SecureResearch Advisory : Reports of Widespread Conficker Infection

March 30, 2009 - Reports of Widespread Conficker Infection

SecureResearch is advising users that the US-CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) has issued advisories over the last 24 hours in regards to the Conficker worm. The Conficker worm can spread across networks and via portable thumb drives. An indication that a system may be infected is the inability to browse to the website of the provider of your security solution. These sites include:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme.jsp?themeid=conficker_worm&inid=us_ghp_link_conficker_worm

http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/viruses/worms/conficker.mspx

http://www.mcafee.com

If you suspect an infection, you should immediately remove your machine from the network it is attached to. Home users should disconnect from the internet if an infection is suspected.

To prevent a Conficker/Downadup infection ensure all systems are patched with the MS08-067 patch and disable the autorun functionality on your windows system.

Information on the MS08-067 patch can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx.

SecureResearch advises users to ensure their anti-virus software is up-to-date and set it to be updated at least once daily. Additionally, SecureResearch advises users to download and execute the Microsoft Malicious Software Remove Tool. The Tool may be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en
